About Wells Fargo Bank

Wells Fargo is an iconic name in American history and often imagined with a six-horse stagecoach that thundered across the American West. Henry Wells and William Fargo founded the Wells Fargo Bank in 1852 as the Wells Fargo & Company that would provide banking and express service to the people of California. The company was founded in New York, and is one of the oldest and renowned banking institutions in America and the world. With multiple mergers and acquisitions over a century, Wells Fargo Bank became the world’s largest bank in 2015 as per their market capitalization. In 2016 it slipped into the second spot behind JP Morgan Chase. In their total assets, Wells Fargo is the fourth largest banking institution in the US banking system.

With its headquarters in San Francisco, California, Well Fargo operates with central offices all across the country and has 262,700 employees. The bank also operates internationally in 35 countries with offices in Toronto, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Dubai. They also employ over 3,000 people as back-office staff in India and Philippines. It is estimated that Well Fargo Bank has 8,200 financial retail centers and 13,000 ATMs. It is also estimated that the globally the bank serves 70 million customers approximately as of 2017. In the same year, the bank was estimated to have total assets of US$1.952 trillion, net income of US$22.183 billion and total revenue was US$88.389 billion. In the home mortgage and debit card service, Wells Morgan still remains the second largest bank in the US. It is also the third-largest bank in the US as per bank assets in 2015 and bank deposits in 2017.

However, despite all these achievements the bank’s history is not devoid of any controversies. In 1981 the bank’s assistant operation manager was involved in the largest amount of money in the history of embezzlement. In 2009 Wells Fargo was taken to court for charging high-cost subprime loans to African-American and Hispanics. The bank agreed to pay a total of $175 million to the people who were the victim of overpaying. $125 million was to be paid to the subprime borrowers and to certain sections assistance with direct down payment was to be done, which was a sum of $50 million. The banking institution was charged with failure of monitoring money laundering by suspected narcotics traffickers. It was suspected that the money was used for shipping 22 tons of cocaine to Mexico with four planes that were bought by the traffickers. Apart from these they were involved in several other lawsuits and charged with malpractices.

Despite all these negative markers Wells Fargo still is one of the sought after banking institutions in America. It had several good practices like setting the environmental record and becoming the number one bank and insurance company in the Green Ranking made by Newsweek Magazine in 2009. The EPA Centre for Corporate Climate Leadership also awarded the Climate Leadership Award it in the category of Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management (Goal Setting Certificate) in 2013. The award was recognition of Wells Fargo’s aim to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 35% in their US operation by 2020. Wells Fargo has also financed over US$6 billion for businesses that cater to benefitting the environment.
