However, both the banks’ history is quite old that had led to the development of Sun Trust Banks, Inc. While Trust Company of Georgia’s founding date goes back to 1891 when it was known as the as the company Commercial Travelers’ Savings Bank after receiving the charter by the Georgia General Assembly. In 1983 Commercial Travelers’ Savings Bank became the Trust Company of Georgia.

Sun Banks then during the 1970s went on an acquisition spree.
After the merger between Sun Bank and the Trust Company of Georgia to become the Sun Trust Banks, Inc. it purchased other financial corporations and businesses. It also launched a medical speciality group in 2014 that would work with independent medical practices. In the same year, Cobb County Stadium was renamed as Sun Trust Park as announced y the Atlanta Braves and would be their new home. It also has a long association with Coca-Cola since 1919.
Despite all these and having a net income of US$1.34 billion (2013), total assets of US$ 204.875 billion (2016) the bank has been involved in few controversies and also paid fines. In 2013 Sun Trust Banks paid US$1.5 billion ‘to resolve claims of shoddy mortgage lending, servicing and foreclosure practices’. It also laid off over 100 IT professionals in September 2015 with a severance agreement clause that was controversial. The provision stated that the laid-off people would be available to help the company for two years without pay. However, in October the clause was removed.
